A stereotype that is further advanced by my next topic, Gears of War. Why would a song about craziness (a term used commonly to describe people with mental illness,) be used for this kind of show? Are the creators suggesting that mental illness has some kind of connection to violent crime? The decision to use this song for this show perpetuates a stereotype that the mentally ill are somehow dangerous. The use always seemed to confuse since the meaning and the mood of the song didn’t fit the exciting, action packed, violent mood of CSI. It is extremely popular and helped to usher in a new era of crime shows on TV. It’s use in Donnie Darko was appropriate because it felt the scene extremely but it’s use in CSI and Gears of War is more troubling.ĬSI is a show about solving often violent crimes.

The reason I chose the song was not so much for the song itself, which is about how all the pressures of the world are making a man go crazy, not unlike Esther in The Bell Jar. It obviously succeeded since it’s always being used in different media. The reason it was originally produced was for entertainment. He played mandolin, the guitar and provided backing vocals. The song “Mad World” by Gary Jules has become very popular because of its use in Donnie Darko, the intro of CSI, and the popular Xbox game, Gears of War. In 2009, he worked for Angel Taylor’s album, "Love Travels".
